Gala Weekend 2021

Saturday, 26 June, 2021 - Sunday, 27 June, 2021

Gala Weekend 2021

In June 2019, we celebrated 40 years of the Ruislip Lido Railway Society, the group of volunteers who run and maintain the railway today. However the railway opened long before the Society was formed, with the first trains running shortly after the end of the Second World War in 1945.

To mark 75 years of the railway since the railway opened, we did plan on hosting a special weekend of intense running with our Workshop open for people to come in and learn about the history of our railway. However, Coronavirus put all that on hold last year and so rather than cancel it fully, we have decided to attempt to run it again this year!

The Workshop will be open for you to look around free of charge on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th June, between 11am & 5pm. Please wear a face covering whilst inside the Workshop.

Highlights include:

  • Workshop & Yard area open to the public with staff on hand to explain what we do and answer any of your questions.
  • See the overhaul progress on our steam locomotive 'Mad Bess'
  • Our track maintenance vehicles will be on display with descriptions of what they are and what we use them for.
  • The Turntable Tea Room will be open at Willow Lawn for all your refreshment needs
  • Our Shop will be open at Woody Bay selling all the must have railway items.
  • Information on how you can become a volunteer on Britain's longest 12 inch gauge railway.

We will be operating a special intense timetable featuring 3 sets of carriages and 4 locomotives in service.

Service A:  Woody Bay > Willow Lawn > Woody Bay
Service B:  Willow Lawn > Haste Hill (non-stop via Woody Bay) > Willow Lawn
Service C:  Woody Bay > Haste Hill > Woody Bay

A special Day Rover ticket will be available on the day, allowing unlimited travel on all trains

Adult Day Rover - £7

Child Day Rover - £5

Standard fares will only be available on the normal service train, service A.

A copy of the timetable for both days can be downloaded using the below links.

Christmas comes but once a year, so take the train because Santa is near!

 Santa, Reindeer & Sleigh.jpg

Santa is a very busy man around Christmas time, but once again, he has managed to find a space in his diary to visit the Ruislip Lido Railway. Santa will be at the railway in 2021 on:

Sunday 5th December

Saturday 11th December

Sunday 12th December

Saturday 18th December

Trains will run regularly from approx 11:20am until 5:00pm. You should allow approx 1.5 - 2 hours for your visit.

Your adventure will start from Willow Lawn Station (by the Waters Edge carvery and car parks), where you will board one of our trains at the time shown on your ticket that you booked for. The train ride, lasting about 12 minutes, will carry you on an enchanting ride through the woods and around the Lido to Santa’s Grotto at Woody Bay Station. Watch out for all the lights and decorations at both stations, and also along the way as you travel through the woods. On arrival at Woody Bay, Santa will be waiting for a chat with the children and a photo opportunity with all the family before EVERYONE (yes – grown-ups too!) receive their presents. Once you’ve seen Santa, you may stay at Woody Bay as long as you wish before catching any train back to Willow Lawn Station, with another opportunity to see the trackside decorations along the way.

In addition to meeting the big man himself, pop in to our Turntable Tea Room where there will be our full range of hot & cold drinks and light refreshments. And for every hot drink purchased in our Tea Room, you'll get a FREE MINCE PIE!

Do please note that this is an outdoor event, and even Santa himself cannot control the weather, so you will need to make sure you’re wrapped up appropriately well to keep you warm, snug, and dry. Also note that Santa looks forward to having a chat with EVERY child that comes to see him, so there may be a short queue to see him in his grotto.
